The Baton Rouge was the prototype of the Baton Rouge class. The class, and the ship, were named for the city of Baton Rouge on Earth's North American continent. (TOS reference: Spaceflight Chronology)
By the time of the 2360s decade, this vessel was succeeded in name by another USS Baton Rouge. (TNG episode: "Eye of the Beholder")
