In 2274, The USS Bold Venture docked at Starfleet Command Headquarters and participated in a rally-style race against five other starships to celebrate the birthday of Admiral Heihachiro Nogura. Bold Venture competed against the USS Enterprise, USS Rim Explorer, and three other ships. Each ship was handicapped based on its engine specifications: Bold Venture launched fourth, Enterprise last.
Race organizer Kyoshi Nogura and fellow cadets paid Free Trader Captain Sturdevant to delay the racers, but the pirate instead kidnapped the cadets and destroyed Rim Explorer.

Captain Vera DiMarco was a former Starfleet Academy student of James T. Kirk, whom he’d described as unusually aggressive and determined. Focused on winning the race, DiMarco had ignored Rim Explorer’s distress call. But, feeling guilty about the decision, she diverted her ship from the race to assist the Enterprise in capturing Sturdevant's ship. Then Bold Venture and Enterprise raced head to head, with Enterprise crossing the finish line 29 hours later, just ahead of Bold Venture. (TOS comic: "The Nogura Regatta")
