USS Bonaventure (NCC-1000) was a Federation starship, a Bonaventure-class prototype cruiser in Starfleet service in the late 22nd century. (The Official Starships Collection Issue Special 12: "U.S.S. Bonaventure NCC-1000")
History and specifications[]
Following the formation of the United Federation of Planets in 2161, Federation Starfleet in the early 2160s decade was an amalgam of the Federation members' service branches, with distinct spaceframe lineages. Engineer Tobin Dax considered Earth designs to be the ideal starting point for a unified Starfleet. In 2163, Dax worked on different designs, including a successor to the NX class where the secondary hull - a separate, underslung component on the Columbia-class - ran through the center of the saucer section. A bridge module sat atop the center of the saucer's diameter. The propulsion was a twin nacelle design. Dax considered saucer/nacelle designs better suited for multi-purpose ships than Vulcan ringships and dart-shaped Andorian ships. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: A Choice of Futures)
In the late 22nd century, the Bonaventure entered service as a prototype cruiser and intended as successor of the NX-class. (The Official Starships Collection Issue Special 12: "U.S.S. Bonaventure NCC-1000")
It carried the NCC registry NCC-1000 on either side of the dorsal saucer, rather than at the bow. At one point, the Bonaventure name was absent from that area. (ST calendar: Ships of the Line 2006, April image)
After construction, the Bonaventure-class[1] was tested at the K2[2] space station at the Starfleet Proving Grounds[3]. (The Official Starships Collection Issue Special 12: "U.S.S. Bonaventure NCC-1000", ST reference: Ships of the Line)
Incidentally, the Gemini-class battleship active in the 2260s decade similarly threaded a round secondary hull through the center of this saucer section but was four-nacelled. (STO - Agents of Yesterday mission: "The Battle of Caleb IV")

Background[]
The NCC-1000’s first, appearance was in the 2006 Ships of the Line calendar, in an image titled "Starfleet Proving Grounds", by the artist Meni. The image was later reprinted in the Ships of the Line book, with accompanying text identifying the class name.
The image is printed in the Star Trek: Enterprise-era section of the Ships of the Line book, and described as a radical step up from the NX-class. The design also uses familiar elements from the Constitution-class.
