"We were ambushed, and I did… escape. But I didn't let my crew die. I blew them up. I knew what awaited them on Qo'noS—degradation, torture, slow, public death. It's the Klingon way. To spread terror. Not my crew. Not on my watch."
Gabriel Lorca, 2256[src]

The USS Buran (NCC-1422) was a Federation starship, a Cardenas-class vessel in Starfleet service in the 2250s decade. (DSC episode: "Choose Your Pain", ST reference: The Official Starships Collection, Discovery issue 7)

Service history and disposition

A few weeks following the Battle of the Binary Stars in May 2256, the Buran participated in Operation Riposte, an early Starfleet offensive in the Federation-Klingon War of 2256-2257. Coordinated by Lieutenant Commander Patel, the Buran tractored Klingon House Mo'Kai DaSpu-class troop transports captured by the fleet after retaking Priors World. (STO - Mirror of Discovery mission: "Operation Riposte")

In the month after stardate 1207.3, the Buran, commanded by Captain Gabriel Lorca, was destroyed over Priors World during a Klingon attack. (DSC episode: "Choose Your Pain"; STO - Mirror of Discovery mission: "Impossibility of Reason")

Around the same time, the mirror universe version of Lorca crossed over to the primary universe and assumed his counterpart's identity. To explain his survival, Gabriel Lorca's mirror counterpart claimed that he deliberately scuttled the ship to prevent its crew's capture by the Klingons. (DSC episodes: "What's Past Is Prologue", "Choose Your Pain")

In December 2256, Harry Mudd reminded Lorca about the inglorious loss of the Buran to drive a wedge between the captain and Lieutenant Ash Tyler. Tyler, however, was not so easily manipulated. (DSC episode: "Choose Your Pain")
