The USS Carolina (NCC-1000) was a Ranger-class Federation starship in service in the 23rd century. (Decipher RPG: Starfleet Operations Manual).
In 2264, Ensign David Bailey served aboard the Carolina as a junior navigator. During his time aboard the ship he earned a number of sparkling recommendations from his commanding officer, which earned the attention of Captain James T. Kirk. (TOS novel: My Brother's Keeper: Constitution).
In 2267, the Carolina was assigned to a sector near Capella IV. At that time the Klingons sent a faked distress call to the USS Enterprise as an attempt to draw the starship away from Capella IV. (TOS episode: "Friday's Child").
- Note: The Star Trek Encyclopedia states that the Carolina was a Daedalus-class starship with a registry number of NCC-160 or NCC-235. However, it was stated in the TNG episode, "Power Play", that all Daedalus-class vessels were decommissioned in the 2190s. The only Daedalus to be in service at this time was the USS Lovell.
