The USS Ceres was a 22nd century Federation starship, a Ceres-class prototype in Starfleet service in the 2160s decade. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: Live by the Code)
Service history and disposition[]
Serving as a testbed for numerous new technological solutions and equipment from various member fleets of the United Federation of Planets, the Ceres was launched around January 2164 for trial runs. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: Live by the Code)
The Ceres was still in active service two years later, and thanks to its good performance, construction of two additional Ceres-class ships were under way. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: Patterns of Interference)
At some point in the 22nd century, the Ceres was lost in the vicinity of the Alpha Aurigae star system. The fourth planet in the system, later known as Capella IV, was named "Ceres" after the lost ship. The Capellan civilisation is believed to be the descendents of the Ceres expedition. (TOS reference: The Worlds of the Federation)
Legacy[]
By the 23rd century, the ship name had been transferred to the Miranda-class cruiser USS Ceres (NCC-26290). (FASA RPG module: Ship Recognition Manual: Federation)
