The USS Chaffee was a Federation starship, a Gagarin-class survey vessel that was in Starfleet service in the 23rd century.
History and disposition[]
In the year 2274, the survey vessel Chaffee made contact with the Bzzit Khaht race in the Nakagima 62B system. This first contact eventually lead to the Bzzit Khaht joining the United Federation of Planets five years later. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek IV Sourcebook Update)
Twelve years later, in early 2286, following the Cetacean Probe's visit to planet Earth and subsequent departure, Chaffee undertook a geological and biological survey of the world Deema III, where a sentient, worm-like species was encountered by the starship's crew (including the recently-transferred Lieutenant Saavik). The Chaffee later journeyed to Vulcan, where it entered drydock in order to undergo repairs. (TOS novel: Unspoken Truth)
