The USS Chimera (initially NX-97400, later NCC-97400) was a 25th century Federation starship, a tier 5-rated Chimera-class heavy destroyer and class prototype in Starfleet service from the 2400s decade. The Chimera was developed by the Starfleet Corps of Engineers at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards under Project Lotus and launched in the year 2407 under the command of Captain Nog, the first Ferengi Starfleet officer. The starship development project for what would become the Chimera began at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards at Mars in the year 2405. Named "Project Lotus", it was a top-secret program conceived by Starfleet planners to produce a medium-sized starship maneuverable enough to engage the Klingon bird-of-prey raiders and square with Negh'Var-class battlecruisers. With that function in mind, Project Lotus aimed to design the vessel around the Dynamic Tactical System (DTS), a weapon system for targeting multiple targets at once.

A key contributor to the project was Commander Nog, who joined Project Lotus after completing his tour as chief engineer aboard the USS Enterprise-E. At Utopia Planitia, Nog joined a cadre of Advanced Starship Design Bureau engineers.

The political reason behind Project Lotus was the start of the Federation-Klingon War of 2405-2410. (STO Collection Issue 02: "U.S.S. Chimera NCC-97400")

Initial service[]

Plan views of the Chimera in 2407.

The prototype USS Chimera (NX-97400) was launched in 2407. Nog received a promotion to captain to become the ship's commanding officer. The Chimera and its sister ships were deployed in the war with the Klingon Empire. Unfortunately, the complexity of constructing a ship around the DTS hindered mass production. (STO Issue 02: "U.S.S. Chimera NCC-97400")

In the year 2409, the Starfleet Corps of Engineers (SCE) had been working on a special new destroyer class starship, designed for high-level combat situations. The project was so secret that access to the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards was restricted for months while the project was completed.

The Chimera-class heavy destroyer was similar to an escort, but had many qualities of light cruisers and science vessels. While in its innate regenerative mode, excess power was transferred to the auxiliary systems and deflector shields. It was equipped with a prototype Dynamic Tactical System (or DTS). This system allowed the Chimera to transform between regenerative mode and tactical mode. In regenerative mode, the tachyon inversion beam was enabled, which could siphon shields from multiple targets. Activating tactical mode transferred additional power to weapons. In tactical mode, the DTS enabled a powerful multi-targeting Lotus, which was capable of piercing multiple targets. However, while in tactical mode, the deflector shields and auxiliary power systems were weakened and the tachyon inversion beam was disabled. (STO Collection Issue 02: "U.S.S. Chimera NCC-97400")

Later service[]

In 2409, the Borg Collective returned to local space and erected a transwarp gate in the orbit of Pollux IV. The USS Khitomer was left damaged. Its recovery effort was aided by the Chimera. Captain Nog and a field-promoted lieutenant in command of the late Captain Masc Taggart's frigate investigated the Borg presence and engaged waves of Borg spheres and Borg probes until the Khitomer and Pollux were safe. (STO - Tutorial mission: "Communication Breakdown")

USS Chimera

The Chimera in the Delta Quadrant.

In 2410, Nog and a fellow Khitomer Alliance captain procured a Krenim artifact from the shady Ferengi trader Qwen at Drozana Station. The artifact had been found on Kyana moon in the Delta Quadrant. The Chimera and its companion ship traveled to the Kyana system. After fighting of Iconian Heralds in orbit and on the surface, Captain Nog activated the device and made contact with Krenim survivors hiding in the system. After lending help to repair the phasing generators, the Krenim agreed to support the Alliance against the Iconians. (STO - The Iconian War mission: "Time in a Bottle")

The Chimera took part in the Battle of Empersa between the Dominion and the Hur'q, as part of Grand Nagus Rom's fleet.

Following the end of the Hur'q Conflict[3] at Empersa, the Chimera was assigned to peacekeeping duties in the Gamma Quadrant. As part of a joint task force, the Chimera and its crew were ordered to assist in the restoration of Hur'q society. Captain Nog felt his crew was up to the task. (STO - Gamma Quadrant mission: "Home")

Chimera at Procyon V

The Chimera at Procyon V in 2554.

The Chimera remained active in the 26th century. During a front in the Temporal Cold War, the Chimera fought the Sphere Builders in the 2550s. In 2554, the Chimera was part of a Federation fleet led by the Universe-class dreadnought USS Enterprise-J in the Battle of Procyon V against the Temporal Liberation Front. The Chimera was among the ships drawing Sphere Builder and Krenim fire away from the Enterprise while the Tox Uthat was integrated into the dreadnought's systems by Captain Montgomery Scott. After the Enterprise fired the quantum phase inhibitor and destroyed the Tuterian spheres, the Delphic Expanse-like transdimensional space dissolved. The remaining Sphere Builder and Krenim forces defended TLF leader Noye and his flagship, the Annorax-class science dreadnought KIV Annorax from the Federation forces. The Chimera became locked in a fierce engagement with a Krenim warship and used its phaser lotus to deal critical damage to the hostile ship until reinforcements arrived. (STO - Future Proof mission: "Ragnarok")
