The USS Clark was a Federation starship, a Ranger-class scout in service to Starfleet in the 23rd century. (FASA RPG module: The Strider Incident)

Service history and disposition[]

The Clark was built to be a member of Task Force 13, a patrol group of three Ranger-class scouts near the Organian Neutral Zone. The Clark, and the rest of Task Force 13, would regularly dock at Defense Outpost 1121 between patrols. It was commanded by a Federation Captain named Lewis.

On the 20th day of a routine patrol of space near the Klingon border, Captain Kristine Reardon, commander of the task force, received a Code Red 1-A emergency transmission on secure federation channels.

"Message incoming, Code Red 1-A to Commander of Task Force 13. Execute your Emergency War Orders. The United Federation of Planets has declared war on the Klingon Empire. Star Fleet Command orders your force to depart for the Stogar system. Enemy forces must not know your movements. You are to engage and destroy any and all enemy forces until Task Force 19 links up with your force. All communications are silenced."

Captain Reardon relayed the message from her ship, the USS Strider, to the other members of Task Force 13 - the USS Clark and the USS Vidal - and their ships departed for the Stogar system, as ordered. Since the Stogar system was inside the Organian Neutral Zone, this would have been an act of war, in peacetime, but now, the Federation was at war, and the Captains acted accordingly.

On reference stardate 2/1808.19, the task force arrived in the Stogar System, and hid an an asteroid belt, awaiting Task Force 19. However, the Clark detected a group of five Klingon D7-M battlecruisers - which significantly outmatched and outgunned the three Ranger-class ships - that seemed to have detected the Task Force. Understanding they stood no chance, Captain Reardon ordered the task force to turn and leave the system. However, the battlecruisers quickly caught up to the Clark and the Vidal, as they had pivoted the opposite direction that the Strider had. The foredeck of the Clark was almost immediately reduced to slag. Realizing the ship was doomed, Captain Lewis put the ship on a collision course with one of the Klingon D-7s, and destroyed both vessels in a large matter/antimatter reaction.

Captain Reardon was unable to fully confirm the loss of the ship before the Strider made its escape. However, upon her return and subsequent arrest, the Clark was listed as destroyed, later further confirmed by wreckage at the site.

Dale Harris, twin brother to Lieutenant Darvin Harris of Defense Outpost 1121, served aboard the Clark, and had been aboard it when it was destroyed. Darvin held Captain Reardon personally responsible for the Clark's fate, and his brother's. While Captain Rearodon was being held for treason, before her name was cleared, Darvin attempted to murder her with a phaser in an act of vengance, but was thwarted by the crew of the USS Lexington.
