The USS Cochise (NCC-530) was a Federation starship, the prototype of the Mk VIIIb Cochise-subclass of the Saladin-class of class I destroyers in the 23rd century, authorized for Starfleet construction on stardate 4699. (TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual)
- The stardate given would seem to suggest this ship was ordered during the TOS era.
History[]
The Cochise was on a routine mission when it stumbled near an interstellar gate, under the command of Captain Jeremiah Chandler. Captain Chandler was taken over by an alien entity, but with assistance from the USS Enterprise, the crew was able to drive the entity from the ship. The incident cost the lives of several crewmembers, including Ensign Andros Stepanovich. (TOS novel: The Final Nexus)
By the 2280s, the Cochise had been converted to service as a Hermes-class class I scout vessel, and was detailed to Starfleet Headquarters with a skeleton crew. Fleet Admiral Harry Morrow took command of the vessel in 2285 for an emergency rescue mission in the Alpha Centauri star system, bringing along Rear Admiral James T. Kirk and Captain Spock on a mission to save the passengers of the disabled transport, the Kismet. (TOS - The Yesterday Saga novel: Time for Yesterday)
Embarked craft[]
The Cochise, in the 2280s, was assigned a cargo shuttle, the Onizuka. (TOS - The Yesterday Saga novel: Time for Yesterday)
