This vessel took its name from the 23rd century USS Constellation (NCC-1017) and USS Constellation (NCC-1974), as well as the latter's successor launched in the 2360s. (TOS - Rihannsu: The Bloodwing Voyages novel: Honor Blade, TNG episode: "Conspiracy")
In 2375, Starfleet called upon Captain Montgomery Scott to make refinements to the design and portions of the Constellation after previously conducting refinements to the USS Sovereign and the USS Enterprise-E. In that year, Spock discussed that with James T. Kirk. Kirk was surprised that their mutual friend Scotty was not only captain of the Sovereign but a designer of the latest Enterprise as well. (ST - Mirror Universe Trilogy novel: Spectre)
By 2378, a Galaxy-class USS Constellation carried the name before it reverted to a Constellation-class USS Constellation by 2409. (TNG video game: Birth of the Federation, STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
- This may indicate that the Sovereign-class vessel carried the registry number NCC-1974-B.
