The USS Constellation II (NCC-1728) was a Constitution-class Federation starship in service in the late 23rd century. She was authorised for construction on stardate 5960 to replace one of the original 13 Constitution class ships lost in the line of duty, namely the USS Constellation NCC-1017.

(Star Fleet Technical Manual)

Service History

The Constellation was one of the vessels assembled to greet the USS Enterprise returning from testing the Inversion drive, a new method of instantaneous point-to-point travel that would render warp drive obsolete.

ST novel The Wounded Sky
Discrepancy note: In this book the Constellation is listed as a light cruiser and implied to be of a different class. Despite the entire tone of the book indicating it was set in the late 2280s, it is nonetheless a prequel to the Rihannsu: The Bloodwing Voyages series, placing it in the early 2270s at the latest. As such, it can be argued that the Constellation reference in this book is actually referring to the class ship for Picard's Stargazer.

At the time of the Levaeri V Incident she was under the command of Captain Mike Walsh.

(ST novel Rihannsu:My Enemy, My Ally)
Discrepancy note: This novel as originally published lists the registry number of the Constellation as NCC-1017, causing some confusion (amongst many other things in this novel) as to the correct placement of this novel in the timeline before the series was re-published in the Rihannsu: The Bloodwing Voyages anthology.
As such, it is unclear whether Ms. Duane actually meant a second Constellation had been built with the same registry number (as was common with novels of the time), or if she merely mixed up the chronological details and meant to use the original Constellation before Commodore Decker was in command.

In 2285, the Constellation II was under the command of Captain Carmen Ikyea. She was lost with all hands after coming out of warp too close to a star. It was later determined that the clocks on board had been running too fast, resulting in the navigational error that caused her destruction.

Admiral Kirk attended the memorial service for the ship and her crew, held at Starfleet Command on Earth.

(ST novel: Time for Yesterday)
Discrepancy note: The date of the loss of the Constellation II is at odds with the introduction of the Constellation class in 2275, as per Diane Duane's Rihannsu: The Bloodwing Voyages anthology, which has 2 ships of the new class already in service.
