The USS Contemplation was a 24th century Federation starship, a combined vessel consisting of an Ambassador-class secondary hull and the saucer section of an unfinished Intrepid-class cruiser. Service history

To compensate quickly for losses sustained by Starfleet in the Dominion War in the 2370s, the Starfleet Reactivation Plan of 2367 was redirected towards constructing ships of the Frankenstein Fleet. Beyond reactivation and refitting 23rd century Miranda- and Excelsior-class starships, the Frankenstein Fleet specifically included incomplete vessels combined into functioning starships. A Frankenstein Fleet vessel could be built from a hull designed and constructed before the 2360s, and components of the newest ship classes. Officially, the older component would identify the ship's class.

The Contemplation was fashioned from a 24th century Ambassador-class hull, and a brand-new Intrepid-class saucer. This vessel was part of the Frankenstein Fleet and deployed for combat in the war. At the time, the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards also had an excess of Intrepid-class warp nacelles and warp cores. Incorporating the components of newer vessels improved the Frankenstein Fleet vessel's performance. One of the Contemplation's sister ships, the USS Elkins, operated with Constitution-class components instead of the Ambassador-class hull. (Star Trek Adventures module: Gamma Quadrant Sourcebook)
