- The Copernicus was named for Nicolaus Copernicus, who developed the heliocentric theory of the solar system.
- The Star Trek Encyclopedia lists the Copernicus' registry number as NCC-623, although it can be seen as NCC-640 on screen in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
