USS Discovery (NCC-1798)

The USS Discovery (NCC-1798) was a Constitution-class Federation heavy cruiser starship of the mk III subclass, ordered for construction in the 23rd century, entering service on reference stardate 2/1010. Discovery was converted as an mk IV subclass refit vessel on stardate 2/1202. (FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)

According to the TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual, the registry number NCC-1798 was originally authorized to be used by a vessel named USS Czar'ak. It is not known if that vessel was built, so one assumption that could be made is that the ship being built with that registry had its name changed to Discovery at some point.
