The USS Drake (NCC-1801) was a Federation starship, a Miranda-class vessel in Starfleet service in the 23rd century. Its commanding officer was Captain Laura Rhone. (TOS - Year Five comic: "Captains of Sea and War")
Service history[]
Laura Rhone was the Drake's captain by 2269. Early in that year, Rhone made the acquaintance of Captain James T. Kirk of the USS Enterprise while on shore leave. They began a loose on-and-off relationship.
Six months later, the Drake defended a Federation convoy of Monarch-class freighters from Nausicaan pirates and their raider starships (with some unwanted and unnecessary assistance from the USS Enterprise).
In early 2271, the Drake was in the process of being refitted to Starfleet's new standards when a miniature black hole appeared within lunar orbit. The crew of the Drake began a scientific analysis of the anomaly, and arrived at a possible solution even before Starfleet Operations did. The now-Reliant-subclass cruiser rushed to Luna to tackle the anomaly. Knowing it was likely a one way trip, the Captain Rhone ordered her crew evacuate. Two of her crew refused, and the ship was presumed destroyed closing the black hole. (TOS - Year Five comic: "Captains of Sea and War")
The hospital ship USS Prospero, of the same class as the Drake and active in the 2270s, also shared its NCC registry number NCC-1801. (TOS novel: Living Memory)
In 2286, the ship was recovered, with Captain Rhone alive. It underwent three months of refit but retained crystal structures and power lines added to its hull. The rollbar was now attached to the bottom of the warp nacelles. The Drake returned to service in 2287, and Kirk visited the soon-to-be Admiral Rhone aboard. (TOS - Year Five comic: "Captains of Sea and War")
