The USS Dyson was a 25th century Federation starship, a Solanae-class Dyson science destroyer vessel and prototype in Starfleet service in the 2400s decade. The Dyson was a hybrid of Federation and Solanae technology. (STO - Solanae Dyson Sphere mission: "A Step Between Stars")
History and specifications[]
In 2409, Dyson Joint Command was an allied organisation between the Romulan Republic, Klingon Empire and United Federation of Planets. Despite the still ongoing Federation-Klingon War of 2405-2410, the three governments cooperated in exploring the Solanae Dyson Sphere and countering the Voth trying to claim the Dyson sphere and its Omega particles. (STO - Solanae Dyson Sphere mission: "Circles within Circles")
Despite the war, the shaky alliance cooperated for the first time in the development of a combined science vessel and destroyer using the Solanae technology found in the sphere and other Iconian assets.[1] Each government would field its own trio of Dyson science destroyer classes. The USS Dyson, IKS Dyson and RRW Dyson served as prototypes. The crews were given distinct uniforms, and Chief Tarkaram served as chief engineer on each Dyson.
Launched in 2409, the Dyson was dispatched to a newly discovered space station in the atmosphere of Delta Solanae to help Rear Admiral Tuvok with a stratagem in the conflict with the Voth. The Dyson's captain was killed aboard the station by a Voth sniper. Tuvok, and mission specialist Doctor Eric Cooper, accompanied by an Allied commanding officer, made their way through the station to prevent the Voth from jumping the sphere elsewhere. Cooper disabled the jump generator but activated an Iconian gateway.
Tarkaram moved the Dyson closer to the station and rescued the trio. Tuvok assumed command, and the Dyson fought Voth ships blocking the gateway. Tarkaram was eager to see the Dyson in action. As a Dyson science destroyer, it could switch between science vessel and tactical mode. Dispatching their opponents, the Dyson pursued a Voth Citadel-class dreadnought through the gateway. They found themselves in the Jenolan Dyson Sphere, and lent aid to the damaged Federation ship USS Gold. The Jenolan sphere had jumped further into the Delta Quadrant than even the Solanae sphere. Cooper revealed himself as an Undine double agent and controlled a fleet of Undine ships that destroyed the Voth dreadnought and engaged the Dyson. They received backup when the IKS Bortasqu', flagship of the Klingon Defense Force, and the RRW Lleiset of the Romulan Republican Force arrived. After defeating the Undine, Captain Koren, daughter of Grilka and Commander Tiaru Jarok claimed the Jenolan sphere, previously Federation territory, for their respective governments. Turok prevented a shooting match by convincing them to focus on the greater threat and negotiate a solution.
The three ships returned to Dyson Joint Command for a meeting with Subcommander Koal. (STO - Solanae Dyson Sphere mission: "A Step Between Stars")
