The USS Enterprise was a sailing vessel from the planet Earth. She was the third American schooner named Enterprise, but the first to serve the United States Navy. She operated early in the 19th century, from 1799 to 1823.
Service history[]
Enterprise was in service for a quarter of a century. She was 85 feet long and was known as the "Lucky Little Enterprise." (TOS novel: Final Frontier)
In 1799, she launched in Chesapeake Bay. In 1800, armed with 12 guns, she liberated 11 American ships and captured eight French privateers during an undeclared war with France.
In 1811, Enterprise was refitted with additional weapons and equipped with brig rigging. (Star Trek: The Magazine vol. 2, Issue 7: "Enterprise Lineage from Schooner to Starship")
She then saw action during the War of 1812. (TOS novel: Final Frontier)
In 1817, while policing the Caribbean Sea, Enterprise captured 13 smuggling and slave ships.
On 9 July 1823, she broke apart on Curacao island without loss of life. (Star Trek: The Magazine vol. 2, Issue 7: "Enterprise Lineage from Schooner to Starship")
Legacy[]
In the 2150s, Captain Jonathan Archer kept a painting of this vessel in his ready room aboard the Enterprise (NX-01). (Star Trek: The Magazine vol. 2, Issue 7: "Enterprise Lineage from Schooner to Starship")
- TNG reference: On Board the USS Enterprise suggested that the painting was of the USS Enterprise (sloop-of-war), but that was a single-masted vessel.
In the year 2275, the original, hand-painted wooden figurehead from Enterprise, in the shape of a dolphin's head, was displayed aboard the Federation Starfleet starship USS Enterprise. (TOS novel: The Wounded Sky)
