The USS Enterprise was a United States Navy screw sloop sailing vessel in service during the late 19th and early 20th century.
Service history[]
She was commissioned in 1877. Though driven by sails, her power was supplemented with steam engines. She carried 110 more personnel and was at least 100 feet longer than the Navy's previous USS Enterprise (1799 schooner).
In 1878, Enterprise surveyed South America's Madeira River and Amazon River, then patrolled the Mediterranean Sea and northern Europe.
She was decommissioned in 1880, then recommissioned in 1882 to conduct hydrographic survey missions all over Earth. In 1887 she returned to patrol duty.
From 1891 to 1909, Enterprise was used as a cadet training vessel, ending her career based out of Massachusetts. (Star Trek: The Magazine vol. 2, Issue 7: "Enterprise Lineage from Schooner to Starship")
