The USS Essex (alternately registered as NCC-1697, NCC-1727 and NCC-1719) was a Federation starship, a Constitution-class class I/class IX heavy cruiser in service to Starfleet in the late 23rd century. Construction of the Essex as a Bonhomme Richard-subclass vessel was authorized by the Starfleet appropriation of stardate 3220. (TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual)
The Essex was commissioned and launched on reference stardate 2/0104. She was later refit as a mk III Achernar-subclass on reference stardate 2/0209. (FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)
In 2269, the Essex was under the command of Captain Salar. That year, the crew intervened during a Klingon attempt to interfere with the culture of 34 Kraol III. (FASA RPG module: An Imbalance of Power)
On reference stardate 2/1803, the Essex was refit as a mk I Enterprise-class heavy cruiser. (FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)
By the 2280s decade, Essex was outfitted as a command cruiser (CC). The ship was easily modifiable with additional technology to become the advanced command cruiser (CC+). (ST video game: Starfleet Command)
