The USS Europa (NCC-1648) was a Federation starship, a Nimitz-class battlecruiser in Starfleet service in the 2250s and 2410s decades. It was the second ship of the class to bear this name and registry, replacing the USS Europa and honoring its loss at the Battle of the Binary Stars in 2256. (STO - Age of Discovery short story: "Utopia Planetia: The Mystery of Yard 39", STO video game: Age of Discovery website: "The Stats of the Europa Class!")

Service history[]

The second Nimitz-class Europa entered service at some point after the destruction of its predecessor in May 2256. In the year 2259, the Europa was one of many Starfleet ships undergoing refits at Yard 39 in the TL-9139 system in the Tellar sector when the star erupted and expelled a wave of baryons. Starfleet hastily evacuated the Federation shipyard and its ships. Due to the high amount of radiation, the system was inaccessible to anyone for 150 years.

In 2411, the local "weather" changed, diminishing the radiation to technologically manageable levels. Ensign Elyos and Lieutenant Whetu of the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards discussed this event during the launch ceremony of the USS Narendra. (STO - Age of Discovery short story: "Utopia Planetia: The Mystery of Yard 39")

Vice Admiral S.J. Hemphill spearheaded the Advanced Starship Design Bureau (ASDB) project to develop a new starship class based on the Nimitz-class. On stardate 87751.8, the Utopia Planitia Starfleet Yard hosted the commissioning ceremony of the USS Europa (NCC-97640), a tier 6 battlecruiser. (STO - Age of Discovery short story: "The Past Reborn")

Around the same time, the formerly derelict and now recovered Nimitz-class Europa re-entered active service, upgraded to the same specifications as the prototype Europa. (STO video game: Age of Discovery website: "The Stats of the Europa Class!")
