Service history and disposition
Construction of the Excelsior as a Bonhomme Richard-subclass vessel was authorized by the Starfleet appropriation of stardate 3220. (TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual)
In 2267, the Excelsior was docked at Starbase 11 undergoing repairs. (TOS episode: "Court Martial")
In 2269, the Excelsior, under the command of Captain LaLiberte, along with the USS Republic, was dispatched to Altair VII in response to an unknown entity that had been attacking several targets in the Beta Quadrant. Captain Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise discovered that a vast machine planet intelligence from a parallel universe called Nagha was behind the attacks. The Excelsior was refit to the Enterprise-subclass specifications, outfitted as an advanced heavy cruiser (CA+), by the 2280s decade. (ST video game: Starfleet Command)
