The USS Fleming (NCC-20316)[1] was a 24th century Federation starship, a Wambundu-class[1] medical transport in Starfleet service in the 2370s decade. (TNG episode: "Force of Nature")
Service history and disposition[]
The Fleming was named after Sir Alexander Fleming, a British Human bacteriologist who discovered penicillin. It was a sister ship of the Wambundu-class light cruiser USS Drake. (ST reference: Encyclopedia, 4th ed.)
In 2370, the Fleming was outfitted as a medical transport. On one transport run through the Hekaras Corridor, the Fleming was disabled by a group of Hekarans, to prove a point about subspace degradation. The ship was late caught in a rupture in subspace, and its crew had to be rescued by the USS Enterprise-D. (TNG episode: "Force of Nature")
Legacy[]
By the mid-2370s decade, a successor ship would be in operation, the construction ship USS Fleming. (TNG video game: Armada II)
In the 2380s, the name USS Fleming was carried by an Olympic-class medical frigate. (ST - Countdown comic: "Number Three")
