The USS Gagarin (NCC-1309)[3] was a 22nd[1] and 23rd century Federation starship, a Shepard-class multirole explorer[1] and light cruiser[2] in Starfleet service from the 2190s[1] to the 2250s[3] decades. Its commanding officer was Captain T'Shen Kovil[3]. (DSC episode: "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum")

The Shepard-class was developed by engineers of the Advanced Starship Design Bureau under the Operation Next Step project in 2195. The Gagarin and its sister ship, the USS Shepard (NCC-1250), were constructed above Luna in the Sol star system in the Tranquility Base Ship Yards and Copernicus Ship Yards. The pair of prototypes launched on 5 May 2196. Due to a seeming issue with the RCS thrusters, the Gagarin launched first. (Star Trek Adventures module: Discovery (2256-2258) Campaign Guide)
This vessel was the fourth ship named Gagarin in Starfleet service. Captain T'Shen Kovil assumed command in the year 2251. Under his command, the Gagarin stopped a plasma minefield from drifting into Outpost R5 on the Romulan Neutral Zone. During the Federation-Klingon War of 2256, the USS Gagarin, USS Hoover and USS Muroc patrolled the same sector. After Kol, leader of the House of Kor, disseminated cloaking technology among Great Houses allied to him, the Klingons ambushed all three ships in this sector simultaneously stardate 1308.9 in November 2256. The Gagarin faced six Imperial warships and sent a distress call when the warp drive failed. The USS Discovery responded the quickest thanks to its spore drive, and attempted to relieve the pressure on the Gagarin, but was unable to interdict a torpedo fired by a Klingon bird-of-prey. The loss of all the three Federation starships patrolling the sector resulted in 462 Starfleet casualties. (DSC episode: "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum")
