The USS Gagarin (NCC-1309) was a Federation starship, a Shepard-class battlecruiser in Starfleet service in the 2250s and 2410s decades. It was the second ship of the class to bear this name and registry, replacing the USS Gagarin and honoring its loss at the Battle of the Binary Stars in 2256. (STO video game: Mirror of Discovery website: "The Stats of the Discovery Operations Bundle!")

Service history[]

The second Shepard-class Gagarin entered service at some point after the destruction of its predecessor in May 2256. In the year 2259, the Gagarin was one of many Starfleet ships undergoing refits at Yard 39 in the TL-9139 system in the Tellar sector when the star erupted and expelled a wave of baryons. Starfleet hastily evacuated the Federation shipyard and its ships. Due to the high amount of radiation, the system was inaccessible to anyone for 150 years.

In 2410, the local "weather" changed, diminishing the radiation to technologically manageable levels. Ensign Elyos and Lieutenant Whetu of the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards discussed this event during the launch ceremony of the USS Narendra. (STO - Age of Discovery short story: "Utopia Planetia: The Mystery of Yard 39")

The project included the recovery and refit of the USS Gagarin NCC-1309. Now rated a tier 6 fleet miracle worker battlecruiser, the ship re-entered service in 2410. (STO video game: Mirror of Discovery website: "The Stats of the Discovery Operations Bundle!")

The recovery of hulks from Yard 39 led to the launch of new ship classes based on them. On stardate 87831.2, by Jayce's Interstellar reported the prototype USS Gagarin (NX-97930), with an image of the moored Gagarin surrounded by workbees included. Meanwhile, the reactivated NCC-1309 visited Earth. (STO - Mirror of Discovery short story: "Jayce's Interstellar: Around the Galaxy")
