The USS Gagarin was a Federation Oberth-class science vessel starship in service to Starfleet in the late 23rd century. It was also the prototype of the Gagarin-subclass, entering service on stardate 2/1912. (ST reference: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)

As of 2279, the Gagarin was under the command of Captain Gralev, with a crew of fifty. That year, they were assigned to study planet Nuvidula IV as a possible source of dilithium. The Gagarin was attacked by a Klingon vessel, the IKS Vo'taq. Once they were boarded, Gralev initiated the self destruct program and destroyed the ship, though not before the Klingons were able to beam themselves and twenty-eight prisoners to their own ship. (TOS novel: In the Name of Honor)
