The USS Gagarin was a Federation scout starship in service to Starfleet in the mid-23rd century.
Prior to his assignment to the USS Enterprise, Montgomery Scott served aboard the Gagarin as a junior engineer alongside Alec MacPherson. While serving aboard the Gagarin, Scott witnessed a dreadful transporter accident. (TOS novel: Crisis on Centaurus; SCE - What's Past eBook: The Future Begins)
Following Scott's reassignment, MacPherson remained aboard the Gagarin where he eventually rose to the chief engineer's position by the late 2260s. Following Starfleet's decision to decommission the Gagarin in 2269, the Gagarin's crew were all reassigned. MacPherson contacted Scott, who was now chief engineer aboard the Enterprise, and requested a job, and was assigned as assistant chief engineer. (TOS novel: Crisis on Centaurus)
