The USS Gallant was a Federation Nebula-class explorer starship in Starfleet service in the 24th century.
The Gallant was in service by the 2340s. (TNG novels: Loyalties, Crossfire)
Following the outbreak of the Dominion War in late 2373, the Gallant was assigned to the front lines in preparation for a major Cardassian-Dominion offensive. While in standard patrol, the Gallant was ambushed by Dominion forces and quickly overwhelmed. The Gallant suffered fourteen separate hull breaches which resulted in the failure of structural integrity and life support and the complete loss of the Gallant's crew.
A short time later, the Gallant's automated distress call brought the USS Enterprise-E to the ship's aid but it was to late to rescue anybody. With no life signs detected, Captain Jean-Luc Picard ordered the Gallant's position to be logged so that the Gallant could later be retrieved. (TNG - The Dominion War novel: Behind Enemy Lines)
