While performing relief work with Bajoran refugees, the Gandhi's commanding officer was killed while attempting to negotiate an exchange of hostages with the Cardassians. Fortunately, Lieutenant Commander Garrett took charge of the situation and prevented any more unnecessary bloodshed. - Starship Creator gives the date of this incident as 2332, which is at odds with "Hour of Fire" (and other sources), which have Garrett serving as commanding officer of the USS Enterprise-C by this date.

By 2371, the Gandhi, under the command of Captain Azon Lexen, had completed its terraforming mission and was assigned to a patrol of the Demilitarized Zone. In this year, Lexen ordered Riker to deliver medical supplies via shuttlecraft to Outpost Sierra III. However, Riker and the supplies were captured by the Maquis to help combat a new outbreak of the Double Helix virus. Following the development of a cure, Riker decided to remain with the Maquis.
