The USS Giacconi[2] (NCC-316608)[3] was a 31st century Federation starship, a vessel in Starfleet service around the 3060s decade. It was destroyed in the Burn, a galaxywide cataclysm. (DSC episode: "Scavengers")

Service history and disposition[]

The Giacconi was equipped with an active, dilithium-powered warp core. When the Burn occurred across the Milky Way Galaxy, the vessel was lost. Its black box survived the cataclysm.

120 years later, the black box had found its way to the salvage yard of the Emerald Chain on Hunhau. It was recovered by the Human courier Cleveland Booker on behalf of Commander Michael Burnham. Burnham, first officer of the USS Discovery, was investigating the cause of the Burn at the time. Following a rescue operation by Burnham and Philippa Georgiou, "Booker" was able to hand the black box to Burnham for analysis. She was keen to determine the exact moment the Burn affected the Giacconi, and compare it to other recovered black boxes, allowing her to triangulate the point of origin of the Burn. (DSC episode: "Scavengers")

With the assistance of Ensign Sylvia Tilly, science officer Burnham determined the moment - down to the millisecond - of the destruction of the Giacconi, the USS Gav'Nor, and the USS Yelchin-E. (DSC episode: "Unification III")
