The USS Grissom (NCC-638) was an Oberth-class Federation starship in service in the 23rd century.
The Grissom was named after Gus Grissom, an early Earth space explorer. By 2285, at the latest, it was equipped with a tractor beam. (ST:CCG expansion: "All Good Things")
In 2270, the Grissom was a newly-launched vessel, and Captain James T. Kirk recommended that Commander Spock be assigned as the ship's captain. However, Spock decided to decline the offer in favour of accepting a teaching post at the Vulcan Science Academy. (TOS novel: The Lost Years)
In 2285, the USS Enterprise was enroute to meet with the Grissom, when Lieutenant Saavik entered Pon Farr. Because of this, the Enterprise delayed the rendezvous. (TOS - The Origin of Saavik comic: "Pon Farr") Following the Enterprise's recovery of Saavik and Xon from Romulan space, the Enterprise eventually made her rendezvous with the Grissom. (TOS - The Origin of Saavik comic: "Blood Fever")
The Grissom was under the command of Captain Jonathan T. Esteban, and was assigned to survey the newly-formed Genesis Planet. After dispatching Lieutenant Saavik and David Marcus to the surface, the Grissom was destroyed by a Klingon Bird-of-Prey commanded by Commander Kruge. (TOS movie: Star Trek III: The Search for Spock)
