The USS Hawking (NCC-618) was an Oberth-class Federation starship in service during the late 23rd century.

This ship was used in Starfleet Academy bridge crew training simulations for the Class of 2288, and in its guise as an unmanned research project test ship was used to create a duplicate of the Miranda-class light cruiser USS Tempest NCC-1852 in a simulated mission.

(Game: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy)

This ship was seen in-game with the given name and registry number clearly written on her hull. However, data taken from the in-game Library computer shows the USS Lake in this role with the same registry number of NCC-618. The obvious solution is to 'adjust' the Lake's registy to something very close, hence NCC-616.
Named after Stephen Hawking, the theoretical physicist.
