History and specifications

In 2354, the Independence was preparing to depart Spacedock at the same time as the Daedalus-class USS Benjamin Franklin. Spacedock Control ordered the Benjamin Franklin to depart after the Independence, but before the Excelsior-class USS Ohio. (TNG novel: The Haunted Starship)

In 2369, Cadet Vorik served his midshipman cruise on the vessel. While aboard, he introduced a new dilithium crystal matrix protocols which improved the ship's power conversion rate by 6%. (ST video game: Starship Creator)

By 2375, the Independence was under the command of Captain George Garfield. In this year, the Independence was transporting Commander William T. Riker to attend the bicentennial celebrations for the signing of the Resolution of Non-Interference, when she was attacked by several Romulan warbirds commanded by Sela near Sector 221-G. The Independence was quickly destroyed by the warbirds, but many crew managed to escape via escape pods. However, Sela ordered the escape pods destroyed and many were before the USS Excalibur intervened. (TNG - Double Helix novel: Double or Nothing)
