The USS Intrepid (NCC-1631) was a Federation Constitution-class heavy cruiser in service to Starfleet in the 23rd century. (ST reference: The Star Trek Encyclopedia; TOS episode: "Court Martial")
Service history[]
The Intrepid was one of the initial batch of Constitution-class starships that were authorized for Starfleet appropriation on stardate 0965, where she was initially assigned the registry number, NCC-1708. She was built to MK I (mark I) specifications by the Vulcans and eventually entered service on reference stardate 1/8804 (2248), with a new registry number, NCC-1631. (TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual; FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual; TOS novel: Crisis on Vulcan)
- TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual referred to Intrepid as a "class I" "mk-IX" ship with registry number of "NCC-1708". Later FASA RPG publications identified it as "class XI" "mk I", with registry set at NCC-1631.
- Last Unicorn RPG module: All Our Yesterdays: The Time Travel Sourcebook gives the ship's commissioning date as 2262.
Throughout most of her career, the Intrepid was attached to the Vulcan Science Academy and crewed mainly by Vulcans who had graduated from Starfleet Academy. One of her early commanding officers was Captain Spiak. (TOS novels: Crisis on Vulcan, Aftershock; ST reference: The Worlds of the Federation)
- ST reference: The Worlds of the Federation states that the Intrepid was the first vessel to encounter a Tholian vessel, but subsequent episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise seem to have disproved that claim.
The Intrepid was later refit to Mk III (Achernar-subclass) specifications and re-entered service on stardate 2/0206. (FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)
In 2264, the Intrepid encountered a Fabrini probe while exploring the Scorpius-Centaurus OB Association. In the same area, the Intrepid also made first contact with the Shesshran. (TOS novel: Ex Machina)
Following his admittance into Starfleet Academy in 2265, Robert Maliani performed his first "apprentice" assignment by refitting the Intrepid's computers. (TOS short story: "Night Whispers")
In 2267, the Intrepid was being repaired at Starbase 11, when the USS Enterprise was ordered ahead of the Intrepid in repair priority. (TOS episode: "Court Martial")
Even as late as 2268, the Intrepid still boasted an all-Vulcan crew, and it was in this year that she was lost while investigating the Gamma 7A system, falling victim to a gigantic space amoeba that sucked the life-force out of living beings and mechanical power sources alike. Commander Spock, also a Vulcan, felt the death screams of the Intrepid crew as they died. (TOS episode: "The Immunity Syndrome")
The commanding officer of the Intrepid was Captain Satak. (DTI novel: Forgotten History)
In 2370, Captain Jean-Luc Picard thought of the Intrepid as one of the names that had gone down in history as infamous and would not be used again. (TNG novel: Dyson Sphere)
Nevertheless, the new Constitution-class USS Intrepid was built and the name has since been used on several other starships. (TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual; FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual; TNG episodes: "Sins of the Father", "Force of Nature")
