The USS Kobayashi Maru II was a 23rd century Federation starship, a Miranda-class cruiser in Starfleet service in the 2260s. The Kobayashi Maru II was named in memory of a 22nd century Earth Cargo Service freighter, the ECS Kobayashi Maru, that was lost in a confrontation of the Earth-Romulan War. The Kobayashi Maru II was assigned a deep-space patrol in 2270 when the vessel received a priority 1 distress call from a freighter, the Zachary Taylor on stardate 5995.7. When Captain Hale ordered the Kobayashi Maru into range of the distress call, the image of the Zachary Taylor on the viewscreen faded, and it was revealed that the Kobayashi Maru was actually moving into weapons range of a D7-class Klingon Empire battle cruiser.
It was later revealed that the Klingons had manipulated a captured Talosian into generating the freighter illusion. The Kobayashi Maru was destroyed by a volley of Klingon weapons fire, with all crew lost. (TOS - Annual comic: "The Final Voyage")
