The USS Lafayette (registry NCC-1720) was a Federation starship, a Constitution-class heavy cruiser in service to Starfleet in the late 23rd century.
Construction of the Lafayette as a Bonhomme Richard-subclass vessel was authorized by the Starfleet appropriation of stardate 3220. (TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual)
In the early 2270s, the Lafayette was under the command of Captain Ryan. Ryan was killed by exposure to Berthold radiation on the planet Andronicus along with his landing party. (TOS comic: "... Like a Woman Scorned!")
The Lafayette was refit to the Enterprise-subclass specifications, outfitted as a command cruiser (CC), by the 2280s decade. The ship was easily modifiable with additional technology to become the advanced command cruiser (CC+). (ST video game: Starfleet Command)
