The USS Leonov was a Federation Miranda-class starship in service in the mid 24th century.

During the Tzenkethi War, William Ross was assigned to the Leonov as second officer. During one battle against two Tzenkethi vessels the Leonov's warp core was breached, and the crew barely had time to make it to escape pods. The Tzenkethi killed half of the surviving crew by shooting down their pods. Those who survived found refuge on an class L planet. (SCE eBook: The Future Begins; ST reference: Ships of the Line)

A few months later, Ross would learn that the Leonov's coordinates had been given to the Tzenkethi by a member of a rogue intelligence network from within the Federation. Ross tracked down the agent to a remote moon in the Arias Sector, where the agent of the rogue intelligence agency known as Section 31 explained his reasoning. The Leonov had been about to receive orders to destroy a presumed Tzenkethi industrial complex that had been based on bad intelligence. Section 31 thought that the loss of innocent life would aggravate matters with the Tzenkethi, and took steps to keep the Leonov from carrying out its mission. (SCE eBook: The Future Begins)

Likely named after Aleksei Leonov^WP, the first man to walk in space.

Background

The Leonov originally appeared in an image by Steve Burg in a Ships of the Line calendar, the image served as inspiration and subsequently the Leonov appeared in The Future Begins. In 2006 the image was reprinted in the Ships of the Line book. The caption in the book offers a different fate for the starship:

The Leonov, under command of Captain Burg, was in service in the Dominion War and suffered damage in the vicinity of Epsilon Draconis III, the order was given to abandon ship and the surviving half of the crew made there way to Epsilon Draconis where they would face their fates, hoping to escape detection by the Jem'Hadar on the Dominion controlled world.
