The USS Luna (initially NX-80101[5], later NCC-80101[6]) was a 24th century Federation starship, the Luna-class prototype in Starfleet service from the 2370s decade. Its commanding officer was Captain Fujikawa. (TTN novel: Taking Wing)
Service history[]
Development[]
Upon the discovery of the Bajoran wormhole in 2369, the Starfleet engineer Doctor Xin Ra-Havreii began working on design for the Luna-class at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards of Mars.
The Luna, and the ships of its class, were named for moons of the Sol star system. Earth's moon Luna was this ship's namesake.
Commander Ra-Havreii was aboard for the launch of the NX-registered USS Luna in the year 2372, under the command of Captain Fujikawa. An accident in the engine room led to the death of several crewmembers. Although Doctor Ra-Havreii was cleared of any wrongdoing, the Efrosian man blamed himself. (TTN novel: Taking Wing)
In service[]
In the 2370s, Starfleet categorized Luna-class ships as tactical heavy cruisers. (Instagram - Star Trek Logs - Picard post: U.S.S. Titan - Starship Record)
In the year 2401, the USS Stargazer investigated a spatial anomaly discovered by the USS Avalon. After a massive Borg ship emerged from the anomaly, Starfleet assembled an armada to reinforce the Stargazer and Admiral Jean-Luc Picard. When the Borg Queen boarded the Stargazer, the Borg Collective attempted to seize control of the fleet. Picard self destructed the Stargazer to stop the Borg and save the armada. (PIC episode: "The Star Gazer")
Q dispatched Admiral Picard on a time travel mission. Following the return of Picard and his team from an alternate timeline and the past, the timeline changed to prevent the self-destruct. The Borg Queen was revealed to be an older version of Agnes Jurati, who had remained in the past. Jurati's Borg and Picard's armada, including the Luna, which was now part of the fleet, moved in formation to dissipate an energy burst that emerged from a newly-formed transwarp conduit. Queen Jurati and her ship remained to guard the conduit. (PIC episode: "Farewell")
On Frontier Day in April 2401, the Luna was one of 36 Luna-class starships participating in the parade and demonstration of fleet formation mode at Sol Station in Earth's orbit. The vengeful Borg Queen of the primary universe Borg Collective assimilated the fleet and its younger crew and began attacking Sol Station. Alongside the USS Hikaru Sulu, USS Cochrane and USS Intrepid, the Luna attacked the USS Excelsior after its crew had regained control. The Excelsior was quickly destroyed by the Borg-controlled Starfleet ships. (PIC episode: "Võx")
Admiral Picard and the USS Titan-A intervened, stopping the queen's plan and restoring Starfleet's control over its ships. (PIC episode: "The Last Generation")
Alternate timelines[]
First splinter timeline[]
In the First Splinter[7] timeline, the Luna-class development project was suspended during the Dominion War but renewed afterwards. In 2379, Ra-Havreii boarded the USS Titan and requested that he remained aboard for the duration of its shakedown cruise, a request which was granted by Captain William T. Riker. He was later assigned as chief engineer following an engineering disaster which killed Nidani Ledrah. (TTN novel: Taking Wing)
Up to 2381 in the Titan chief engineer Ra-Havreii wrestled with his guilt for the Luna engine room accident. (ST - Destiny novel: Gods of Night)
Mirror universe[]
In a permutation of the mirror universe where the second Terran Empire rose to prominence, the ISS Luna (NCC-80101) was one of several Terran Starfleet ships to bear the name. The Luna was involved in crossovers with the primary universe from 2409. (STO - Cardassian Struggle mission: "Defend the Beta Ursae Sector Block")
