The USS M-31 was a Federation starship, a so-called "galaxy ship" in service in the late 23rd century.

History and specifications[]

As such a vessel, Starfleet's intended purpose of Magellan was to survive the limits of the Milky Way Galaxy and perform long term observation and exploration outside of the galaxy's borders. (TOS - Duty, Honor, Redemption novelization: The Wrath of Khan)

Background[]

At the time the novelization was written, author Vonda N. McIntyre had apparently intended to depict the next step in Starfleet's evolution showing these ships leaving the galaxy towards nearby neighbor galaxies. The Star Trek franchise continued in the following years to raise questions, making these descriptions fail to fit with the general state of Star Trek's storytelling, particularly with Star Trek: The Next Generation establishing early on that Starfleet had not followed through with attempts to reach other galaxies, in TNG episode: "Where No One Has Gone Before".
