An earlier ship with the name "Magellan" was the 24th century Inquiry-class battlecruiser USS Magellan (NCC-86509), active into the year 2401. (PIC episode: "The Star Gazer")
The new Magellan had entered service by the year 2409, near the end of the Federation-Klingon War of 2405-2410.
The USS Monarch in 2411.
The Magellan and its class were an iteration of the 2360s-era Nebula-class science vessel and developed as part of the Fleet Modernization Program. Components and aesthetics of the Magellan matched the Monarch-class exploration cruiser design spearheaded by the USS Monarch (NCC-95127), which iterated the Galaxy-class explorer. As such, the USS Magellan and the USS Monarch were the modern counterparts of earlier classes. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
Another ship of the same name was the USS Magellan (NCC-71820-A), which operated in the Solanae Dyson Sphere in 2409 as part of the Dyson Joint Command initiative. (STO - Solanae Dyson Sphere mission: "Mayday!")
From the year 2410 onwards, the Magellan represented its class on Starfleet Shipyards Operations interfaces at facilities across the Milky Way Galaxy, including Earth Spacedock and the Jenolan Dyson Sphere. (STO - Delta Quadrant mission: "Escalation")
Khitomer Alliance flag officers deployed the Magellan in every quadrant of the galaxy as part of the four-quadrant strategy. (STO - New Dawn mission: "Admiralty System")
