The USS Melbourne (NCC-62043) was a 24th century Federation starship, an Excelsior-class heavy cruiser in Starfleet service in the 2360s decade. In the year 2367, the Excelsior-class Melbourne took part in the Battle of Wolf 359 alongside its intended Nebula-class successor[4] USS Melbourne. (STO - Task Force Operation mission: "Battle of Wolf 359")
Service history and disposition[]
The USS Melbourne launched in the year 2342. (ST reference: The Autobiography of Jean-Luc Picard)
In 2364, the Melbourne was docked at Starbase 74 at the same time as the USS Enterprise-D, undergoing repairs. When the Enterprise was subsequently stolen by the Bynars, repairs on the Melbourne were rushed as it was the only vessel that could travel fast enough to catch the Enterprise. (TNG episode: "11001001")
By the mid 2360s a Nebula-class replacement was under construction to replace the Melbourne, and the new Melbourne was ready by 2367. Both the old[5] and new[6] Melbourne were sent to the Wolf 359 system to face the Borg, and both ships were subsequently lost in the course of the battle. The two ships shared their NCC registry number, NCC-62043. (TNG episode: "The Best of Both Worlds"; DS9 episode & novelization: Emissary)
The USS Melbourne was part of the fleet of 40 ships assembled by Vice Admiral J.P. Hanson to waylay Borg cube 632[7] at Wolf 359. Hanson's fleet engaged Locutus' cube in battle and hoped to stop it from reaching Earth in Sector 001. Locutus of Borg, the assimilated Starfleet captain Jean-Luc Picard, used his tactical knowledge to decimate the Federation fleet. (STO - Task Force Operation mission: "Battle of Wolf 359")
The Melbourne was wrecked and effectively destroyed in the battle when Locutus stopped the Melbourne with a tractor beam before using a cutting beam to shatter the ship's saucer section. (DS9 episode & novelization: Emissary)
In 2369, Benjamin Sisko created a holoprogram at Deep Space 9 that included the Melbourne as part of an attempted strategy to defeat the Borg Collective in a recreation of the Battle of Wolf 359. Sisko conceived new attack patterns he hoped might change the results of the battle. (DS9 comic: "Program 359")
In 2373 the USS Voyager discovered one of the escape pods from the USS Melbourne with survivors aboard, including Marshall Sinclair. The Melbourne escape pod had been trapped along with several others in a rift where time flowed at a different rate. Unfortunately the survivors had to re-enter the rift to prevent Voyager from being trapped inside. (VOY comic: "Ghosts")
In the 2410s, the Melbourne was one of the 31 shipwrecks on display along a docking arm of the Wolf 359 Memorial Station in the Wolf 359 star system. With the intact, decommissioned USS Hood taking a separate docking port, close to the space station's primary hull, the Melbourne occupied in 2nd memorial position on the spiraling docking arm. (STO - Both Worlds mission: "Omega Molecule Stabilization")
In 2411, Captain Ezri Dax oversaw a Khitomer Alliance training simulation wherein Alliance starships re-enacted the battle on the holodeck to prepare for combat with the Borg Kingdom from the mirror universe. The Excelsior-class Melbourne was one of the ships recreated holographically for the operation. (STO - Task Force Operation mission: "Battle of Wolf 359")
