The USS Melbourne (NCC-62043) was a 24th century Federation starship, a Nebula-class science vessel[3] in Starfleet service in the 2360s decade. The Melbourne participated in the infamous Battle of Wolf 359. (TNG episode: "The Best of Both Worlds")
During a battle of Wolf 359 where this Melbourne was deployed alongside another ship of the same name and registry number, the Nebula-class vessel operated as PCU Melbourne (NCC-78256). (STO - Task Force Operation mission: "Battle of Wolf 359")
Service history and disposition[]
Namesakes[]
The Nebula-class Melbourne and its Excelsior-class USS Melbourne namesake were named for the city of Melbourne in Australia on Earth. The two starships also shared the NCC-62043 registry number. (ST reference: Encyclopedia, 4th ed.)
Active service[]
The Melbourne was a variant of the Nebula class, a prototype from before series production. Atop the mission pod was a pair of small warp nacelles. The aft end of the engineering hull mirrored the design of the Galaxy-class rather than the shorter hull of other Nebula-class starships.
The newer Melbourne was meant to replace its Excelsior-class namesake. It visited a purple nebula in 2366. (TOSC Issue 156: "USS Melbourne")
The Melbourne was the first Nebula-class ship to incorporate certain radical design changes. It was constructed at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards under the supervision of Thomas Halloway. Commander William T. Riker of the USS Enterprise-D was offered the command of the Melbourne, but he turned it down to remain as first officer on board the Entrprise. (TNG short story: "Trust Yourself When All Men Doubt You")
Battle of Wolf 359[]
When the Borg invaded the Federation in 2366/2367, Halloway rushed to complete construction on the Melbourne and took it into battle against the Borg at the Battle of Wolf 359 where it fought alongside its predecessor. (TNG - The Sky's the Limit short story: "Trust Yourself When All Men Doubt You")
The Melbourne was already wrecked by the time the USS Saratoga was evacuated. (DS9 episode: "Emissary")
Both the old and new Melbourne were destroyed, with all hands lost. (TNG - The Sky's the Limit short story: "Trust Yourself When All Men Doubt You")
When the Enterprise-D passed by the battlefield, the Melbourne appeared to have burning sections. (TNG episode: "The Best of Both Worlds")
Legacy[]
In a false future simulated by an alien orphan, William T. Riker had a model of the Melbourne on his desk during his supposed captaincy of the Enterprise-D. (TNG episode: "Future Imperfect")
In the 2370s, Captain Benjamin Sisko kept a model of the Melbourne in his office on Deep Space 9. This version of the Melbourne included a triangular mission pod in place of the extra warp nacelles. (DS9 episode: "'Til Death Do Us Part")
In the 2410s, the Melbourne was one of the 29 shipwrecks on display along a docking arm of the Wolf 359 Memorial Station in the Wolf 359 star system. With the intact, decommissioned USS Hood taking a separate docking port, close to the space station's primary hull, the Melbourne occupied in 12th memorial position on the spiraling docking arm. Its Excelsior-class namesake occupied the 2nd position. (STO - Both Worlds mission: "Omega Molecule Stabilization")
In 2411, Captain Ezri Dax oversaw a Khitomer Alliance training simulation wherein Alliance starships re-enacted the battle on the holodeck to prepare for combat with the Borg Kingdom from the mirror universe. The PCU Melbourne was one of the ships recreated holographically for the operation. (STO - Task Force Operation mission: "Battle of Wolf 359")
