The USS Merrimack[3] (NCC-61827[1]) was a 24th century[3] Federation starship, a Nebula-class[1] science vessel[2] in Starfleet service by the 2360s[4] decade. (TNG episode: "Sarek")

Service history[]

This vessel was named after the ironclad warship USS Merrimack, which had served as the CSS Virginia until it was captured by the United States of America during the American Civil War in the 1860s. (ST reference: Encyclopedia, 4th ed.)

In 2362, after receiving a distress call from Rugal IV, the Merrimack prevented three K't'inga-class battlecruisers from attacking the Federation planet. (Decipher RPG module: Starships)

In 2366, the Merrimack was assigned to personnel transport duties; it ferried Ambassador Sarek and his entourage back to Vulcan after the successful conclusion of a treaty on Legara IV. (TNG episode: "Sarek")

In 2367, the Merrimack was assigned to the Vulcan Science Academy for special assignment. (TNG episode: "Brothers")

In 2368, the Merrimack was to become part of the 23 strong Federation fleet, along with the USS Enterprise-D, so that they could blockade Romulan ships interfering in the Klingon Civil War. (TNG episode: "Redemption")

Later that year, the Merrimack was to rendezvous with the Enterprise so that she could transfer Wesley Crusher aboard, so that the Merrimack could take him back to Starfleet Academy. (TNG episode: "The Game")

502nd patrol squadron

The 502nd's assignment patch.

In 2370, Gowron was abducted from Deep Space 9 by the Duras sisters and the Enterprise followed the birds-of-prey responsible. As Worf said, the Merrimac, five hours away, was the closest one.

Eventually Gowron was rescued and soon after, the Merrimac and the USS Hornet was called to Deep Space 9 when six birds-of-prey threatened the station, however the ship was ten hours away. (TNG novelization: Klingon)

Following the re-activation of the Iconian Gateway Network across the Milky Way Galaxy in 2410, the Merrimack was requisitioned for Starfleet's new four-quadrant strategy of exploration. Starfleet Command hastily assembled patrol squadrons. The Merrimack was assigned to the 502nd Patrol Squadron. (The Official Starships Collection Issue STO 14: "USS Shran")
