The USS Newton[2] (NCC-1727)[4] was a 23rd century[2] Federation[2] starship, a Newton-class[1] battleship[1] in Starfleet[2] service in the 2250s[2] decade. (TOS movie & novelization: Star Trek)

The Newton-class battleship was named after the Human scientist Sir Isaac Newton from 1600s Earth. (ST video game: Fleet Command)

The Newton had entered service by the 2270s decade. In the year 2273, the Newton and an unnamed Miranda-class starship were involved in battle with a trio of Romulan Vas Hatham-class birds-of-prey. Q and the newly-ascended Will Decker part of V'Ger witnessed the battle, and the destruction of the Miranda ship. (TOS - Waypoint - Special comic: "Consider Eternity")

In the Kelvin timeline, the Newton was active in the 2250s. When a phenomenon described as a "lightning storm in space" threatened Vulcan in 2258, the Newton was one of several ships docked at Starbase 1 at Earth scrambled to warp to the Vulcan system.

Cadet Blake was among the members of 2258's Starfleet Academy graduating class hurriedly assigned to the Newton to bring the ship to full readiness to respond to the crisis. Moments after arriving at Vulcan, the Newton and the rest of its fleet were destroyed the time-displaced 24th century Romulan mining ship Narada, which proceeded with the destruction of Vulcan. Following the loss of the Newton, Starfleet launched a successor ship of the same class, which helped save the Vulcans from obliteration at the hands of the Romulans in the Battle of Ceti Alpha V. (TOS - Legacy of Spock comic: "Part 4")
