The USS Orleans (NCC-966) was a Federation starship. She was a Ranger-class explorer in service to Starfleet in the 23rd century. (Decipher RPG module: Starfleet Operations Manual)
Service History[]
In 2256, Starfleet selected the Orleans for testing the new Type 5 phasers. The tests ultimately proved successful with this type being installed fleet-wide in four years. (Decipher RPG module: Starfleet Operations Manual)
- According to the Manual, the Orleans was a test-bed for prototype phasers. In Decipher RPG module: Starships, the first phasers for starships were tested in the early 23rd century with the Type 1 phaser being installed fleet-wide in 2220. Over the decades, several other types of phasers were installed in the fleet: Type 2s in 2242, Type 3s in 2244, and Type 4s in 2245. The next phaser improvement came with the Type 5 in 2260. Using this information and what is said in the earlier guide, this is a compromise of the two sources.
