The USS Phoenix (NCC-625) was a Hermes-class Federation starship in service in the late 23rd and early 24th centuries, authorized for construction by Starfleet appropriation on stardate 0965. (TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual)

Sometime before 2269, the Phoenix was assigned an exploratory mission at the edge of the Orion Arm of the Milky Way Galaxy. A lot of information was transmitted back to Starfleet, however that data was of little use to the USS Enterprise when they were flung into orbit of Mercan. (TOS novel: The Abode of Life)

In 2269, the Phoenix was the command ship for Vice-Commodore Larry Propp while the starship orbited the planet Waycross. (TOS novel: Perry's Planet)

In 2270, efforts to deploy the modified cloaking device that Captain James T. Kirk procured from the Romulans two years before, (TOS episode: "The Enterprise Incident") almost resulted in the loss of the USS Phoenix. (ST video game: Legacy)

The Phoenix remained in service, at least, in to the early years of the 24th century. At some point in her thirty years service up to 2333, Mollie Katz served as a transporter chief aboard the Phoenix. (STA novel: Gauntlet)

By the 2360s the Phoenix had been decommissioned or lost and replaced by a Nebula-class vessel bearing the name Phoenix. (TNG episode: "The Wounded")
