The USS Prometheus (NCC-71201) was a Federation starship, a Nebula-class explorer that served in the late 24th century. It was named after the Greek mythological figure of Prometheus.
Service history and disposition[]
The Prometheus was built by Yoyodyne Division at 40 Eridani A Starfleet Construction Yards. (DS9 episode: "Second Sight")
In the year 2370, the Prometheus assisted Professor Gideon Seyetik in his attempt to re-ignite the dead star Epsilon 119. Prior to the ignition attempt, Miles O'Brien and Jadzia Dax assisted in boosting the vessel's top speed to warp 9.5 as a precaution. Afterwards the ship headed to New Halana to drop off Nidell. In 2378, the Prometheus headed to Starbase 12 at the time where the USS Dauntless, USS Geronimo, USS Excalibur and the soon to be launched USS Sovereign were docked. (TNG video game: Bridge Commander)

Background[]
The Prometheus was still active in 2378, 5 years after the USS Prometheus (NX-59650) was commissioned. Thus, for several years, Starfleet had two starships named USS Prometheus active. A possible reason for this is that Starfleet recommissioned the Nebula-class version during or after the Dominion War, similar to how the USS Melbourne was rushed into service during the Borg attack of 2367, even though there was already another USS Melbourne in service at the time. It is also possible the secrecy of the prototype Prometheus gave due cause to misdirect inquiries about ships with that name by referencing the older ship.
By 2383, the Nebula-class starship USS Tonawanda sported the registry number NCC-71201. As this ship was described as having "been in service for nearly three decades", it is possible that the Prometheus was renamed Tonawanda sometime after the commissioning of the Prometheus-class starships.
