The USS Proxima was a Federation starship in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century. It was of a smaller class than the Luna-class, categorised as an explorer, and couldn't easily be typified as a heavy cruiser.
Early in the year 2386, the Proxima was assigned to take over the USS Ganymede's mission of exploration in the Gum Nebula. (TTN novel: Sight Unseen)
