The USS Repulse (NCC-2544) was an Excelsior-class explorer that was commissioned in the year 2357 under the command of Captain Taggert.
The ship was named for HMS RepulseWP, a 20th century Renown-class battlecruiserWP that served in the Royal Navy. (ST reference: Star Trek Encyclopedia, 2nd ed.)
History
One of the Repulse's first assignments was to deliver a group of Starfleet cadets, including the Academy's first Klingon recruit Cadet Worf, to the colony of Dantar IV. (TNG novel: Starfleet Academy: Line of Fire)
The Repulse returned to Dantar IV soon after picking up a distress signal from the colony, which had been attacked by the Brikar. From there, the ship journeyed to Starbase 3. (TNG novel: Starfleet Academy: Survival)
In 2358, Commander Katherine Pulaski MD and Ensign Elizabeth Shelby were assigned to the Repulse. (ST video game: Starship Creator: Warp 2)
In 2365, the Repulse rendezvoused with the USS Enterprise-D in order to facilitate the transfer of Pulaski to the Enterprise. Pulaski returned to the Repulse a year later. (TNG episode: "The Child", novel: Vendetta)
In 2367, command of the Repulse had been taken over by the original Captain Taggert's daughter, Captain Ariel Taggert. The second Captain Taggert quickly distinguished herself in a three-way battle between Starfleet, the Borg, and an ancient doomsday machine created by a long-forgotten race and controlled by the mysterious woman named Delcara. The Repulse turned the tide in the battle by utilizing the deflector dish weapon developed by Commanders Geordi La Forge and Data earlier that year. (TNG novel: Vendetta)
In 2370, the Repulse transported Ambassador Lwaxana Troi to Alpha Tiberia when Ambassador Zul of Triannis took ill, necesitating that he be replaced on the negotiating team. (TNG novelization: All Good Things...)
In 2376, the Repulse was under the command of Trill Captain Kila Vet. During the Gateways Crisis, Captain Vet activated a resonator on an Iconian Gateway located on the world Tethys III, helping to end the galaxy-wide crisis. (TNG - Gateways What Lay Beyond novella: The Other Side)
