The USS Ross (NX-76710) was a 24th century Federation starship, a Ross-class exploration cruiser prototype and later command exploration cruiser in Starfleet service from the 2380s decade. She was named after Mary G. Ross, one of the first Native American women engineers in Earth's 20th century space program. Service history and disposition[]
The Ross was launched in 2381, a prototype and technical testbed for new designs. A hybrid of Galaxy- and Sovereign-class starship aesthetics, the ship was equipped with advanced shields, high-resolution sensors, modular laboratories, extensive diplomatic suites and most notably, a secondary warp core located in the saucer section. Under the command of Captain Azeri Sull, the maiden voyage of the Ross took her to the Shackleton Expanse as part of Starfleet's 20th Fleet, based out of Narendra Station. The Ross was the first Starfleet vessel to have a holographic first officer, Commander EXEO, and also carried a large complement of Odanians among the crew, working out of the Cetacean Ops department. While operating out of Narendra Station, the Ross was involved in incidents with the Borg, the Tal Shiar and the Klingon Empire. (Star Trek Adventures module: Utopia Planitia Sourcebook)
In the 2370s, the Phalanx-class heavy cruiser prototype USS Phalanx was another class that combined Galaxy- and Sovereign-class aesthetics. (SOTL calendar: Ships of the Line 2019: Centerfold)
By the early 25th century, it was one of a number of starship classes based on the venerable Galaxy-class explorer. From the year 2411 onward, the Ross represented its class in the Starfleet Shipyards Operations interface. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
Khitomer Alliance flag officer in, or aligned with, Starfleet, deployed Ross for missions around the galaxy's four quadrants as part of the four-quadrant strategy. (STO - New Dawn mission: "Admiralty System")
Following the Battle of Excalbia on stardate 84999.22[1] in early 2411, which saw the prominent involvement of hero ships from the Federation's past and present, the Ross was among the exploration cruisers that received a refit to legendary starship classification. (STO - J'Ula's Discovery missions: "Measure of Morality (Part 2)", "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
The Ross was upgraded to a tier 6 command exploration cruiser specifications. The ship retained its NX registry number prefix. (STO website: 10th Anniversary Legendary Starship Bundles: The Legendary Command Exploration Cruiser)

Background[]

- Cryptic Studios based the USS Ross on the "Clear Skies" fan RPG group. (STO website: 10th Anniversary Legendary Starship Bundles: The Legendary Command Exploration Cruiser)
- This ship was named for the Human mathematician and engineer Mary G. RossWP of NASA. (StreampunksRPG tweet)
- The Ross and her class were modeled for Star Trek Online by Thomas Marrone, whose work was later adapted by Star Trek Adventures for the second season of Star Trek: Picard. This marked one of the few instances when an element created for a fan production made its way into licensed products, and then into canonical productions.
